Early Pregnancy Signs Often Go Unnoticed

Early pregnancy signs are often not immediately recognized. No wonder many women wonder, “How do we know if we are pregnant?”. Some early pregnancy symptoms resemble premenstrual symptoms, making it difficult to tell the difference.

Understanding bodily changes early on is very important so you can get proper checkups and care. Below, you’ll find explanations of the early pregnancy signs you should be aware of.

Are Pregnancy Symptoms the Same as PMS?

Early pregnancy symptoms often resemble premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Both can cause breast tenderness, mild cramps, mood swings, and fatigue. The difference is, pregnancy symptoms usually last longer and are accompanied by distinct signs such as nausea, sensitivity to smell, and missed periods.

Interestingly, some women experience pregnancy without symptoms and only realize it after several weeks.

19 Early Signs of Pregnancy

At the very early stage, for example just 3 days after conception, the signs are usually not obvious. However, some women may notice subtle changes. Here are 19 common early pregnancy signs:

  1. Missed Period

  2. Breast Tenderness and Sensitivity

  3. Darkening of Nipples and Areola

  4. Nausea or Vomiting (Morning Sickness)

  5. Sensitivity to Certain Smells

  6. Feeling Tired Without Clear Reason

  7. Frequent Urination

  8. Significant Mood Swings

  9. Bloating

  10. Mild Abdominal Cramps

  11. Higher Basal Body Temperature

  12. Drastic Appetite Changes

  13. Mild Headaches

  14. Dizziness or Faint Feeling

  15. Constipation

  16. Increased Saliva Production

  17. Implantation Bleeding (Light Spotting)

  18. Glowing Skin or Acne

  19. More Visible Breast Veins

How to Check Pregnancy

The only way to confirm pregnancy is through a test, not just physical symptoms. Especially in the very early days (1–3 days after conception), signs are nearly impossible to detect without medical tests.

Two main methods are used to detect hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin):

  1. Urine Test (Test Pack)

    • Most practical and can be done at home.

    • Best taken after a missed period or at least 1–2 weeks after intercourse.

    • Results:

      • Two lines/plus sign = likely pregnant

      • One line = likely not pregnant

      • Unclear results = retest in a week or consult a doctor

  2. Blood Test

    • Done at healthcare facilities and considered more sensitive and accurate.

    • Two types:

      • Qualitative (detects presence of hCG)

      • Quantitative (measures exact hCG levels)

    • Can detect pregnancy earlier than urine tests.
