Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by joint pain and stiffness caused by the deterioration of cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in a joint, leading to friction between bones. This condition can worsen with age if not addressed early. One recommended treatment is acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that has been used for thousands of years. With advancements in science, acupuncture techniques have been recognized by modern medicine and are performed by specialists in medical acupuncture.

This treatment involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. In medical acupuncture, stimulation modalities can be added based on individual needs, such as electrical stimulation (electroacupuncture), heat stimulation, or light and laser stimulation.

Benefits of Acupuncture for Osteoarthritis

According to Dr. Krisma Perdana Harja, Sp.Ak, a Specialist in Medical Acupuncture at Tzu Chi Hospital, the effectiveness of acupuncture for osteoarthritis depends on the severity of symptoms, as each stage requires a different approach.

“Osteoarthritis is divided into four stages, and treatment is determined based on clinical examinations and X-ray results. At stage 4, surgery is inevitable, and acupuncture can only reduce the pain but will not eliminate it completely. At stage 3, acupuncture can help reduce medication use and alleviate pain, though symptoms may eventually recur. Meanwhile, for stage 1 and 2 osteoarthritis, acupuncture can be effective when combined with appropriate exercise and physiotherapy,” explained Dr. Krisma.

Acupuncture aims to activate nerve fibers that send impulses to the central nervous system and trigger an anti-inflammatory response to reduce joint inflammation. It works by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain-relieving hormones, reducing oxidative compounds to slow cartilage damage, and improving the range of motion in knee joints.

Is Acupuncture Safe for Osteoarthritis Patients?

One of the main advantages of acupuncture is its relatively high safety level, provided it is performed by a professional practitioner using sterile equipment.

Some individuals may worry about the pain caused by acupuncture needles. For such cases, laser acupuncture is a painless alternative.

Before undergoing acupuncture treatment for osteoarthritis, consult with a specialist in medical acupuncture at Tzu Chi Hospital. The doctor will recommend the type of acupuncture best suited for your comfort and condition.
