Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive therapy for varicose veins that uses laser energy. The heat from the laser closes the problematic vein, and the bulge disappears almost instantly.

EVLA is an alternative to traditional open surgery for treating varicose veins. This method minimizes patient discomfort and supports faster recovery. Want to know more about how EVLA works? Read on to learn the details.

Who Needs EVLA?
The main goal of EVLA is to relieve pain and discomfort caused by varicose veins, while also improving the appearance of bulging, twisted, or bluish-purple veins in the legs.

Additionally, EVLA helps prevent future varicose vein complications. If left untreated, varicose veins can disrupt blood flow back to the heart, causing blood to pool in the legs. This may lead to leg swelling, skin ulcers near the varicose veins, and even blood clots (deep vein thrombosis).

EVLA is recommended for patients with varicose veins who:

  • Experience symptoms such as pain, swelling, or skin discoloration in the legs
  • Have recurrent varicose veins after previous surgery
  • Are postpartum mothers whose varicose veins persist several months after childbirth

Why Choose EVLA?
EVLA has become increasingly popular due to its many benefits. Studies have shown that EVLA offers high success rates with fewer complications compared to vein stripping surgery.

Key advantages include:

  • Less pain compared to open surgery
  • Minimal scarring after the procedure
  • Faster recovery time
  • Shorter procedure duration
  • No need for general anesthesia, reducing anesthesia-related side effects

The EVLA Procedure
EVLA is performed by making a small puncture in the leg to insert a catheter into the affected vein. A laser fiber is then inserted through the catheter to deliver heat, which damages and closes the vein. Local anesthesia is used to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

The procedure typically takes 20–40 minutes. Afterward, the doctor will wrap the treated leg with a bandage and compression stocking to reduce swelling. Patients can walk immediately but should avoid strenuous exercise for at least two weeks.

EVLA works best for large varicose veins. For optimal results in smaller veins, your doctor may recommend combining EVLA with sclerotherapy during the same session.
