During Ramadan, maintaining overall health can be a unique challenge, including taking care of oral health. Changes in eating and drinking patterns during fasting can lead to several oral health issues, such as bad breath, dry lips, and mouth ulcers. Of course, no one wants these problems to disrupt their fast.

Therefore, it is essential to maintain oral hygiene, consume healthy foods, and stay adequately hydrated. Let’s explore some practical tips for keeping your teeth and mouth healthy during fasting to support smooth worship and daily activities.

Understanding Oral Health Changes During Fasting

When fasting, the absence of food and fluid intake for extended hours causes a reduction in saliva production. Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral moisture and inhibiting bacterial growth. Reduced saliva flow can result in dry mouth, leading to bad breath and an increased risk of mouth ulcers.

Moreover, people tend to consume high-sugar foods during iftar (breaking the fast), which, if excessive, can contribute to tooth decay and further oral health issues.

Tips to Maintain Oral Health During Fasting

  • Brush Your Teeth Regularly

Brush your teeth twice daily, after suhoor (pre-dawn meal) and before bedtime, to remove food debris and prevent plaque buildup. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities. Don’t forget to gently clean the tongue and, if possible, use dental floss to reach areas between teeth. Mouthwash can be used as an additional cleansing agent if needed.

  • Consume Nutrient-Rich Foods

Include fruits and vegetables rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants to support oral tissue health and promote wound healing. High-fiber foods like apples, pears, and carrots can help naturally clean tooth surfaces. Adequate protein intake is also important for maintaining oral health. Limit foods and drinks high in sugar.

  • Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor to keep the body hydrated and maintain oral moisture. Water also helps neutralize acids and wash away bacteria that cause bad breath. Minimize the intake of caffeinated and carbonated beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.

  • Visit Your Dentist if Needed

If you experience dental issues such as cavities, bleeding gums, or mouth ulcers during fasting, do not delay seeking professional care. Your dentist can identify the underlying causes and provide appropriate treatment.

By practicing simple but consistent care, you can maintain good oral health and comfortably perform your fasting.
