When people hear the word "acupuncture," most immediately shudder, imagining tiny needles being inserted into the skin. However, with advancements in medical technology, the benefits of acupuncture can now be enjoyed without the use of needles.
This acupuncture procedure utilizes lasers with wavelengths that penetrate the skin's surface and stimulate deeper tissues within the body. The laser used is a low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with low intensity, ensuring that the laser beam does not damage the tissue.
What are the advantages of laser acupuncture? Let’s explore them in the following article:
1. Painless
As the name suggests, laser acupuncture uses laser beams instead of needles to stimulate acupuncture points. The use of lasers is completely painless as it does not involve any puncturing. Instead, the laser applicator is simply placed on the skin's surface over the targeted acupuncture points.
This makes laser acupuncture an ideal option for both children and adults who are uncomfortable with the sensation of needle punctures.
2. Photobiomodulation Effects
Laser acupuncture provides the same benefits as needle acupuncture but offers additional photobiomodulation effects that cannot be achieved with needles. Photobiomodulation enhances cellular metabolism, which helps reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and accelerate the healing of injured tissues.
3. Minimal Risk
In addition to being painless, laser acupuncture carries very minimal risk. This was highlighted by Dr. Krisma Perdana Harja, Sp.Ak, a medical acupuncture specialist at Tzu Chi Hospital.
“There are certain points that require strong stimulation, but these points might be located near sensitive areas, such as large blood vessels or organs. With needle acupuncture, no matter how skilled the practitioner, there is always some level of risk. Laser acupuncture allows us to treat these areas deeply with minimal risk. So, compared to needle acupuncture—which already has low risks—laser acupuncture reduces the risks even further,” Dr. Krisma explained.
4. Does Laser Acupuncture Have Side Effects?
Laser acupuncture has virtually no side effects if administered at the correct dosage. While needle acupuncture typically takes 15–30 minutes per session, laser acupuncture only requires about 5 minutes.
Additionally, both patients and practitioners must wear special protective glasses to avoid direct eye exposure to the laser.
To fully benefit from laser acupuncture, it’s essential to consult with a medical acupuncture specialist to determine your specific needs before starting treatment.
