Tzu Chi Hospital, in collaboration with the Indonesian Intercontinental Traditional Medicine Association (PPTII) and Jaroemsadha, held a public seminar titled "Understanding Traditional Chinese/Intercontinental Medicine in Indonesia" on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Tzu Chi Hospital Auditorium. The event was held offline and attended by 159 participants, including members of the general public and healthcare professionals.

Dr. Gunawan Susanto, Sp.BS, President Director of Tzu Chi Hospital, stated that in its effort to deliver professional healthcare services, Tzu Chi Hospital provides both conventional and traditional medical services. In the future, the hospital aims to integrate both approaches to offer more holistic health solutions for the community.

Unlocking the Secrets to Vitality and Longevity with TCM

The seminar was divided into two sessions, each featuring expert speakers in their respective fields. The first session was delivered by Mr. Ferdinand, B.Med, M.CM, Ph.D, who presented “Secrets to Vitality and Longevity through TCM.” He explained how people in the past maintained balanced energy through proper diet, regular lifestyle, and sufficient rest—allowing them to live up to 100 years. In contrast, many people today neglect rest, choose food based solely on taste, and live unhealthy lifestyles, leading to health decline as early as age 50. He emphasized the importance of maintaining energy balance through healthier lifestyle changes and acupuncture therapy to treat conditions caused by disrupted energy flow.

The second session featured Ms. Yuni Fransisca Wijaya, B.Med, M.Med, with the topic “Women’s Health: TCM Approaches to Hormonal Balance and Fertility.” She specifically discussed women’s health from the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, addressing biological conditions such as menstruation and pregnancy, and how acupuncture can alleviate disturbing symptoms. Following the sessions, participants were given the opportunity to engage in a Q&A discussion.

During the event, PPTII also presented a token of appreciation in the form of a commemorative plaque to Tzu Chi Hospital, recognizing it as the first hospital in Indonesia to provide Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services. This service has been available at Tzu Chi Hospital since March 2024.

William Adi Teja, a member of the PPTII Supervisory Board and TCM Practitioner at Tzu Chi Hospital, expressed that incorporating traditional medicine services in hospitals is still relatively new. He hopes the presence of intercontinental traditional medicine services at Tzu Chi Hospital will encourage more traditional medicine practitioners—including those practicing Indonesian traditional medicine—to join, thus giving the public more options in traditional healthcare.

Through this seminar, Tzu Chi Hospital hopes to enhance public understanding of the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine and promote the integration of conventional and traditional medical services. This effort aims not only to offer more holistic healthcare solutions but also to strengthen public trust in traditional medicine as part of Indonesia’s healthcare system.
