Hernia is often considered an adult condition. However, this condition can also affect infants and children. Therefore, it is important for parents to be aware of the symptoms of hernia in children, which are discussed in the following article.
A hernia is a condition in which tissue or an organ protrudes from its normal position. Hernial bulges in children can appear at any age, but they are most commonly found in newborns. Nevertheless, the bulge may not be noticeable in babies under one month of age.
Causes of Hernia in Children
The causes of hernia in children differ slightly from adults. Most hernias in children are caused by congenital defects, where a passage in the abdominal wall does not close completely, leaving a gap. This gap allows internal organs, such as the intestines, to pass through, appearing as a bulge.
If the bulge appears in the groin or genital area, the condition is called inguinal hernia. Meanwhile, a bulge around the belly button is called an umbilical hernia. These two types are the most common hernias in children.
The risk of hernia is higher in children with a family history of hernia, premature birth, or male gender. However, it is still possible for girls to develop a hernia.
Symptoms of Hernia in Children
Parents need to carefully observe any abnormalities in their child’s body and behavior, as young children cannot clearly express discomfort caused by a hernia.
Some symptoms of hernia in children include:
- Inguinal hernia: bulge in the groin area (in the scrotum for boys and in the labia for girls)
- Umbilical hernia: bulge around the belly button
- The bulge may become larger when the child coughs, cries, or strains, and shrink or nearly disappear when the child is calm
- Fussiness and decreased appetite
Recognizing hernia in children helps parents monitor their child’s health more closely. By understanding the above symptoms, parents can act quickly if they suspect their child has a hernia.
If you notice a bulge that appears and disappears in your child’s belly button or groin, take them to a general surgeon at Tzu Chi Hospital. The doctor will perform an examination to diagnose whether the bulge is a hernia and determine if further treatment is necessary.
