Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Blood stem cell transplantation is a procedure involving the infusion of healthy stem cells from a compatible donor into a recipient's body to replace damaged or malfunctioning blood-forming cells. The donor and patient must meet specific compatibility criteria, which are assessed through Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) testing.

Stem cells can be obtained from peripheral blood or bone marrow, depending on the patient's medical condition and indications. Peripheral blood stem cells are collected using an apheresis machine, which separates the required blood components and returns the remaining components to the donor's body.

The healthy stem cells are then administered to the patient intravenously via infusion; thus, the administration process does not require invasive surgery.

Prior to transplantation, the patient undergoes a "conditioning" process—which may involve chemotherapy—to prepare the bone marrow and suppress abnormal cells, in accordance with the treatment protocol determined by the physician.

Following the transplant, the patient undergoes close monitoring and is placed in a sterile room for a specific period. This supports the growth and development of the new stem cells while minimizing the risk of infection during the time the immune system remains compromised.

Medical Technology

Apheresis Machine

An apheresis machine is used to selectively separate and collect specific blood components. Unneeded blood components can be returned to the donor's body, allowing for a more controlled stem cell collection process.

Sterile Room

A sterile room is used to help reduce the risk of exposure to germs or bacteria when the patient's immune system is compromised during the transplantation process. Room conditions—including air circulation, air pressure, temperature, and humidity—are strictly controlled to ensure patient safety during the recovery period.
